What should you look for in a dog muzzle?

A good dog muzzle fits so your dog can open their mouth to pant and drink. That is the first thing to check. Breathable basket designs leave more room, while soft adjustable styles sit closer and suit short outings. How to measure your dog for a muzzle

Measure around the nose about an inch below the eyes, and from the tip of the nose to just below the eyes for length. Then check the sizing chart on the product page, because shapes differ. A short nosed dog needs a very different fit from a long nosed one. There should be room for a tongue to hang out and for a few treats to pass through.

Introduce the muzzle gradually

• Let your dog sniff the muzzle and give a treat for looking at it
• Hold a treat inside so the nose goes in on its own, then take it away
• Add the strap for a second at a time, with praise and treats
• Build up the time slowly and stop if your dog seems stressed
• Never use a muzzle as a punishment, and never leave a dog unattended in one

Soft styles can be handy for brief grooming or a short vet visit, but are usually not meant for long wear or heat. Check the product notes for the intended use. Clean a muzzle with mild soap and warm water, rinse well and let it dry fully. Check straps and buckles often, and stop using any muzzle that shows wear.
