When does a dog coat make sense?

A dog coat is useful when the weather is colder or wetter than your dog likes. Small, lean, short coated and older dogs often feel the chill first, so a dog coat or jacket for winter walks can help. Dogs with thick double coats may not need extra layers. Ask your vet if you are not sure.

Types of dog jackets in our range

  • Raincoats with hoods for drizzly walks
  • Padded jackets for colder days
  • Plaid, denim and trench styles for a smarter look
  • Hooded coats and costume style coats for dress up

How to measure for a dog coat

Measure the back length from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, then the widest part of the chest, then the neck. Back length is the most important for coats, because it decides how much of your dog is covered. A good coat sits flat, closes comfortably and leaves room for walking, sitting and toileting. Choose a lighter jacket for mild or rainy weather and a padded one for colder days. Check that straps and closures do not rub, and that the leash can still clip to the collar or harness. Wipe clean or wash following the product's care notes, and let it dry fully before the next wear. Supervise your dog while dressed, and take the coat off indoors. Keep a spare dry layer at home so wet coats can dry fully between walks.

Dog Coats & Jackets: frequently asked questions

What size dog coat do I need?

Start with back length, then check chest and neck against the size chart. If your dog is between sizes, pick the larger one. Deep chested breeds often need more room through the chest than their length suggests.

Do small dogs need a coat for winter?

Small and short coated dogs lose body heat faster, so many owners like a jacket for winter walks. Watch your dog's behaviour and shorten outings if they shiver. This is general guidance, not veterinary advice. Lighter layers are in our [sweaters and hoodies](/collections/pet-sweaters-hoodies).

Is a dog raincoat worth it?

A hooded raincoat can keep a dog's back and chest drier on wet walks, which makes towel time quicker. Choose one with a comfortable fit around the legs and a hood your dog will tolerate.

Can a dog coat work with a harness?

Many coats have a gap or opening on the back for a leash clip. Check the product details and try the coat and harness together at home. A thin harness often fits under a loose coat.

How do I get my dog used to a jacket?

Let your dog sniff it, put it on indoors for a short time and reward with a treat. Add a short walk once your dog seems relaxed. Remove it if your dog freezes or seems stressed.
