How do you choose and measure for a dog collar?

Start with how your dog lives. A dog collar that sits on a daily walker needs a soft edge and a buckle that holds, while a dressy collar for photos or events can be lighter. Look at the width too. Small dogs and puppies do best in narrow bands, and bigger dogs need something wider so the pressure spreads across the neck. If your dog has a thick coat, check the underside for smooth stitching that will not rub. Wrap a soft tape around the middle of the neck, where the collar will actually sit, and read the number. Then add room: you should be able to slide two fingers flat under the collar on a dog, and one finger on a cat. Choose a size where your measurement falls in the middle of the adjustable range, so you can tighten or loosen as a puppy grows or a coat gets thicker. Recheck every few weeks for young animals.

Cat collars, bells and breakaway styles

A cat collar should feel light and sit loose enough to move slightly without sliding over the ears. Many owners choose a breakaway clasp, which is designed to release under strain, and a small bell so birds and neighbours hear a cat coming. Cats often protest at first, so put it on during a meal or play and take it off after a few minutes, then build up. General guidance, not veterinary advice: ask your vet what suits your cat.

What you will find in this collection

  • Adjustable collars in solid colours and printed patterns, from fruit shapes to bears and sunflowers
  • Bow tie and floral collars for dressing up, including knitted and crochet pieces
  • Leather collars and soft edge collars for everyday wear
  • Glowing and reflective collars for evening walks
  • Collars with a bell, and tracker compatible designs that hold an AirTag

Wipe fabric and leather with a damp cloth, hand wash printed bands in mild soap, and let them dry fully before the next walk. Check buckles and stitching often, and replace a collar that frays. Pair a collar with a matching leash or harness from our other pet collections.

Dog & Cat Collars: frequently asked questions

What size dog collar do I need?

Measure the neck where the collar sits and add about two fingers of room. Pick the size whose adjustable range puts your number near the middle. If your dog is between sizes or still growing, go up and tighten the strap.

Is a cat collar safe to leave on all day?

Many owners use a breakaway cat collar that is meant to release under strain, and check the fit regularly. Each cat is different, so ask your vet for guidance. This is general guidance, not veterinary advice.

Should I use a collar or a harness for walks?

Collars are great for holding ID tags and daily wear. Many owners prefer a [harness](/collections/pet-harnesses) for walks, especially for small dogs and cats, because it spreads pressure across the chest.

How do I clean a dog collar?

Wipe leather with a damp cloth and let it dry away from heat. Hand wash fabric, knitted or printed collars in mild soap and air dry them. Always check the buckle and stitching afterwards.

Can I attach an AirTag to a pet collar?

Some of our collars include a holder made for an AirTag, so you can clip one in. Check the product page for the holder style and fit it snugly so it does not dangle.
