How do you choose a cat carrier?

A cat carrier should be roomy enough for your cat to stand, turn and lie down, with good airflow on several sides. Backpack and bubble window styles give cats a view, while sling bags and top opening bags make it easier to lift a nervous cat in without a struggle. For car trips, look for a carrier or car seat bed that has a secure loop for the seat belt.

Measuring your pet for a carrier

Measure from nose to the base of the tail for length, and from the floor to the top of the head or shoulder for height. Add a few inches so your pet is not squashed. Check the weight limit on the page, and remember that a pet shifting inside feels heavier on your back. Small dogs, cats, rabbits and other small pets can use many of the same styles.

Carriers, backpacks and strollers compared

  • Soft carrier bags and slings: light and easy to carry for short trips and vet visits
  • Backpack and front pack carriers: hands free for walking, transit and travel
  • Transparent and bubble window carriers: let curious pets see out
  • Rolling carriers with a telescopic handle: take the weight off your shoulders
  • Foldable dog strollers and wagons: useful for older or tired dogs, or long outings

Leave the carrier out at home for a week or two with a soft blanket and a few treats inside. Let your pet walk in on their own. Then close the door for a minute, carry it round the room, and build up to short trips. A familiar towel helps. General guidance, not veterinary advice: ask your vet about travel. Wipe the inside with a damp cloth and mild soap, air it out, and check zips and straps before each trip. A carrier is for travel and should not replace a secure space at home. Pet Carriers & Strollers: frequently asked questions

What size cat carrier do I need?

Measure your cat from nose to tail base and floor to head, then add a few inches. The cat should be able to stand, turn and lie down. Also check the weight limit on the product page.

Are soft or hard cat carriers better?

Soft carriers are lighter and easier to store, and rolling or ventilated cage style carriers give more structure. Choose by how your cat travels and how far you will carry it.

How do I get a cat into a carrier?

Leave it out at home so it becomes familiar, put a blanket and treats inside, and never force your cat in. A top opening style can make lifting easier. This is general guidance, not veterinary advice.

When should I use a dog stroller?

Owners use a dog stroller for small, older or tired dogs, and for crowded outings where walking is hard. It does not replace exercise, so ask your vet what suits your dog. For walking gear, see [leashes](/collections/pet-leashes).

Can a pet carrier go in the car?

Some styles are made as car seat carriers with a strap for the seat belt. Check the product details, secure the carrier so it cannot slide, and never leave your pet alone in a parked car.
