Electric Shaver Buying Guide: Foil, Rotary and What Actually Matters

Quick answer: pick a foil shaver if you shave daily, want the closest finish and shave straight lines (face, legs, underarms). Pick a rotary shaver if you shave every few days, have contoured areas to cover or deal with hairs that grow in different directions. Beyond the head type, the features that matter are wet and dry use, battery life over 45 minutes, and a full metal head that rinses under the tap.

Foil or rotary: what is the actual difference?

A foil shaver hides oscillating blades under a perforated metal screen. It shaves in straight strokes, sits flat against the skin and gives the closest, most uniform cut, which is why daily shavers and anyone shaving large flat areas prefer it. A rotary shaver uses three spinning heads that flex independently. It follows curves, jawlines, knees, ankles, and forgives circular motion and longer gaps between shaves. Blade access. Heads that pop open or lift off clean faster and dry properly. Sealed heads that need a brush collect buildup and lose closeness sooner.

Skin comfort. Hypoallergenic foils and rounded guard edges matter more than motor speed claims. If your skin marks easily, prioritize a model marketed for sensitive skin and shave with light pressure; pressing harder never improves the cut.

Under about $40 you get a solid single purpose shaver: one speed, USB charging, usually wet and dry. The $40 to $80 range adds better batteries, displays, pop up trimmers and travel locks, and is where most people should buy. Above $80 you are paying for multi head kits, faster motors and metal builds; worth it for daily shavers, unnecessary for occasional use.

Corded, cordless or travel size?

Cordless with USB charging is the default and right for almost everyone. Add a travel lock if the shaver rides in a bag, because a shaver that switches itself on in luggage arrives with a dead battery. Dedicated mini shavers earn their place in a gym bag or carry on but work as a backup, not a main shaver.
