Sizing and Fit

Inseam Length for Your Height: The Jeans Fit Chart

High waist bootcut jeans shown at full length, an example of choosing the right inseam length for your height.

Short answer: The right inseam length for your height is roughly twenty seven inches if you are under five feet two, twenty nine inches between five feet two and five feet seven, and thirty one to thirty three inches above five feet eight. Measure from your crotch down to the floor in bare feet, then subtract about one inch for a hem that skims the top of a flat shoe. Cropped, ankle and capri jeans run two to six inches shorter than those numbers on purpose, so read the cut before you read the number.

Height is the variable most shoppers guess at. Measured data published by the National Center for Health Statistics at the CDC puts the average height of women aged twenty and over in the United States at sixty three and a half inches, or five feet three and a half, from survey data collected between August 2021 and August 2023. That average lands almost exactly on the seam between the petite band and the regular band that most denim is cut to. It is the clearest reason one pair of jeans puddles at the ankle while the next, bought in the same size, stops two inches short.

How to measure your inseam at home

Measure from the top of your inner thigh straight down to the floor, barefoot. That one number is your body inseam, and every length printed on a denim label is a version of it. It takes a minute and you only have to do it once.

  1. Stand with your back flat against a wall, feet together, shoes off.
  2. Place a hardcover book spine up between your legs and slide it up until it sits firmly against your body, the way a crotch seam sits.
  3. Mark the wall in pencil at the top edge of the book.
  4. Measure from that mark straight down to the floor, keeping the tape vertical against the wall.
  5. Write the number down in inches. This is your body inseam, not your jeans size.
  6. Check it against a pair you already love: lay them flat and measure the inner seam from crotch to hem.

The book method beats free handing a tape measure because it fixes the top of the measurement at a repeatable point on your body. The international standard for garment body measurement, ISO 8559 Part 1 on anthropometric definitions for body measurement, defines inside leg length the same way: from crotch level vertically down to the floor.

Inseam length for your height: the chart

Find your height, read across, then adjust for the cut. Every figure below is a finished garment inseam, meaning the number a brand prints on the label, not the body measurement you just took.

Your height Full length Ankle length Cropped or capri Usually labeled
Under 5'2" 26 to 27 inches 24 to 25 inches 20 to 23 inches Petite
5'2" to 5'4" 28 to 29 inches 25 to 26 inches 21 to 24 inches Petite or regular
5'5" to 5'7" 29 to 30 inches 26 to 27 inches 22 to 25 inches Regular
5'8" to 5'10" 31 to 32 inches 28 to 29 inches 24 to 26 inches Regular or tall
5'11" and above 33 to 35 inches 30 to 31 inches 26 to 28 inches Tall

Two things shift these bands. Heel height is the obvious one, adding an inch or two of required length. Rise is the one shoppers miss. A high waist pair sits higher on your torso than a mid rise pair, so the same body produces a longer finished leg on the high waist version. When you fall between two bands, buy toward the longer inseam. Denim can be taken up by a tailor. It cannot be let down.

How each jean cut changes the inseam you need

The cut decides where the hem is supposed to stop, so two pairs with identical inseam numbers can look completely different on you. Match the cut to the landing point rather than to the number.

  • Straight leg: the most forgiving cut for length. Anywhere from the top of the ankle bone to the top of the foot reads as intentional. Browse straight leg jeans if you want one pair that works with both flats and boots.
  • Wide leg: the least forgiving. A wide hem needs to nearly touch the floor or the whole leg looks cut off. Buy wide leg jeans one to two inches longer than your chart number and wear them with a slight heel.
  • Bootcut and flare: longest of all. The hem should cover most of the shoe and stop roughly half an inch off the ground. These cuts are the single best argument for sizing up in length.
  • Skinny and slim: should stop at or just above the ankle bone. Extra length bunches at the calf and shortens the leg visually.
  • Cropped, ankle and capri: these are deliberately short. A capri that hits mid calf is correct; a full length pair that accidentally hits mid calf is not. Judge them by where they land on your leg, never by the inseam number alone.

Where the hem should land with each shoe

Shoes move the target by up to two inches, more than the gap between two neighboring inseam sizes. Decide which shoes a pair is for before you buy the length.

  • Flats and sneakers: hem grazes the top of the shoe with a small break, or sits just above the ankle bone for a cropped look.
  • Ankle boots: hem ends at the top of the boot shaft or just inside it. The worst outcome is a hem that stops half an inch above the boot and exposes a strip of sock.
  • Knee high boots: hem tucks in, so length matters far less. This is where a too long pair is rescuable.
  • Heels: add one to two inches. A pair hemmed for flats will always look short with heels, but a pair hemmed for heels can be cuffed for flats.

How Fashorio thinks about denim length

Fashorio carries denim across five distinct length families rather than one default, because the chart above only helps if the lengths actually exist on the rack. The current women's jeans range runs from cuffed capri and cropped wide leg through ankle skinny, full length straight and loose straight, up to bootcut built to clear a heel.

Two Fashorio tools do the arithmetic for you. The denim fit finder takes your height, rise preference and usual shoe and returns the cuts and lengths that fit those three answers together, which is the part a static chart cannot do. The clothing size calculator handles the waist and hip side of the same question, so you are not solving length correctly and width by guesswork.

One practical note on hems. A raw hem can be cut and left raw at any length. A finished cuff has to be rebuilt by a tailor, which costs more and sometimes loses the detail that made the pair interesting. Check the hem construction before buying a pair you already know you will shorten.

Five inseam mistakes worth fixing

  1. Buying your body inseam as your jeans inseam. The two are related, not identical. Most people want a finished inseam close to their body inseam, sometimes half an inch under for flats.
  2. Trying jeans on barefoot. Try them with the shoes you will actually wear, or the hem decision is being made against the wrong reference point.
  3. Assuming petite means short everywhere. Petite sizing shortens the rise and knee position too, not just the hem. If only your legs are short, a regular size hemmed down often fits better.
  4. Ignoring stretch content. Denim with elastane relaxes over a day of wear and can gain half an inch in length. Rigid denim holds its number. Buy stretch pairs at the shorter end of your band.
  5. Hemming before wearing. Wear and wash a new pair once before taking it to a tailor. The length you measure on day one is rarely the length you live with.

The takeaway

The inseam length for your height falls in a band, not on a single number: about twenty seven inches under five feet two, twenty nine inches through the middle, and thirty one to thirty three inches above five feet eight. Measure your body inseam once with a book against a wall, then treat the cut and the shoe as the two adjustments that move you within your band. When you are genuinely between two lengths, Fashorio would take the longer one every time, because a tailor can shorten denim and nobody can lengthen it.

الأسئلة الشائعة

What inseam length is considered petite?
Petite denim usually runs a 26 to 28 inch inseam at full length, versus 29 to 31 inches for regular. Petite sizing also shortens the rise and moves the knee break up, so it is not simply a shorter hem. If only your legs are short and your torso is average, a regular size hemmed by a tailor often fits better than a petite size.
How do I know if my jeans are too long?
Try them on in the shoes you plan to wear. If the hem stacks into more than one soft fold above the shoe, or drags on the ground at the back, they are too long. A small break at the front is intentional on straight and bootcut jeans; stacking at the calf on a skinny pair is not.
What inseam do ankle jeans have?
Ankle jeans typically run two to three inches shorter than the full length version of the same cut, so roughly 25 to 27 inches for most heights. They are meant to stop at or just above the ankle bone. Taller wearers often need to buy a full length pair and have it shortened to get a true ankle break.
Does heel height change the inseam I should buy?
Yes, by up to two inches, which is more than one full inseam size. Jeans hemmed for flats will read short with heels. Jeans hemmed for heels can be cuffed for flats, so if a pair has to do both jobs, buy the length that suits the heels and cuff it down.
Should I size up or down when I am between two inseam lengths?
Size up. A tailor can shorten denim easily and inexpensively, and a raw hem can be cut and left raw. No tailor can add length back to a pair that is already too short. Stretch denim is the one exception, since elastane relaxes with wear and can gain about half an inch.
